Let’s be clear, “being creative” does NOT “mean making stuff up.” Never EVER lie or exaggerate on your resume! Those “little lies” almost always get found out. They will completely ruin your chances of getting the job, and they could ruin your reputation as well.

That being said, it is important to be creative and “think outside of the box” when conducting a job search. Thinking out of the Box (better known as creative thinking) seeks to create something new from a few basic elements that are already in place. Being an out of the box thinker can be a rewarding experience for the job seeker. If the herd is going to the right, you go to the left.

For job seekers, thinking outside of the box may mean trying a different approach to the job search. We recently saw a marketing professional standing in the town square with a 6 foot balloon that read, “Creative marketing professional looking for a job.” Now THAT’S out-of-the-box thinking, and we understand that he got several calls that evening! While that approach may not be the right approach for everyone, it apparently worked for this guy. What would it mean to think out-of-the-box in your job search?

Focus the Nation: Seizing the Opportunities of the New Energy Economy; Portland State University- Hoffmann Hall, 1833 SW 11th Ave., Portland, OR
April 17th- 6-9 p.m.

Focus the Nation will hold our local kick-off town hall (1 day before the rest of the country launches about 170 other town halls). Congressman Earl Bluemanuer, Rep. Jules Bailey, Rep. Ben Cannon, Mayor Sam Adams, Commissioner Jeff Cogen will be in attendance for this town hall to discuss the city and state’s role in the transition to the new energy economy.

Mayor Adams will be unveiling the City of Portland & Multnomah County’s Climate Action Plan at this event, and will open it up for the first time to public comment at the Focus the Nation town hall! This will be a great time to bring YOUR input to the table and to make sure YOUR values are captured by this action plan!

Vizwerks is taking part in a panel discussion called “Working in the Creative Economy” featuring Susan Hoffman (Executive Creative Director at Wieden+Kennedy), Steve Potestio (Managing Director at 52 Limited), Randy Higgins (Creative Director at Vizwerks) and Jolie Giese (General Manager at Nau).

The event was organized by University of Oregon – Portland Library and Learning Commons, Career Center and Portland Student Action Council as way of connecting establish creatives with up-and-coming talent. It’s the first official U of O event at the newly opened White Stag building.
